Anti-smoking Story Boards by Oakwood Primary

Hello, we are Miss McKee’s class from Oakwood Primary School.  Over 5 weeks during March 2009 we did some work with two artists, Heather and Siobhan. We have made two storyboards to inform you about the health risks of smoking in the house.

We have learnt about the effects of passive smoking and how bad it is for people living in the same house a as a smoker. It makes your clothes smell, stings your eyes, can cause asthma and more serious diseases too! We now know what storyboards are; filmmakers use them to put a story together before it’s filmed. They can plan the beginning, middle and end. They’re a bit like comic books and have pictures, words, and sometimes speech bubbles.

As a class we worked together to plan the stories, write the words, paint and collage the pictures. We think these stories could encourage other children to speak to their parents about not smoking in the house.

Smoke free home pledge

Smoke Free Homes and Zones! You can make a pledge for a smoke free home so that you and your family will be healthier, breathing clean, smoke free air. It’s also good because you and your brothers and sisters will be less likely to get asthma and other serious diseases. You and your clothes will smell clean & fresh. You and your pets will be healthier and live longer. You will be less at risk from house fires.

For a gold promise, the whole house has to be smoke free. This means smoking outside the house. Glasgow City Council created this scheme for young people like us so we can grow up to be strong and healthy adults.  If you would like more information on making a smoke-free house pledge then please contact them through one of the above links.

We hope you enjoy our storyboards!
